Is Switzerland just a new market for French companies, or can it serve as a real springboard to international markets?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The question is increasingly relevant for French companies looking beyond their domestic market. In 2023, French multinationals controlled 1,800 subsidiaries in Switzerland, or 3.3% of all their subsidiaries abroad. That same year, these Swiss subsidiaries generated \u20ac72 billion in consolidated revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The French presence in Switzerland is therefore not limited to a few large groups. In 2024, French investment in Switzerland amounted to CHF 25.1 billion. More than 1,700 French companies were established in the country, employing more than 87,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why is Switzerland so attractive to French companies? And above all, why can Geneva become a base for winning clients well beyond the Swiss market?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Switzerland, a nearby market for French companies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For a French company, Switzerland\u2019s first strength remains its proximity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The border is close, travel is relatively easy and economic exchanges are substantial. In 2025, trade between France and Switzerland reached CHF 47.2 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But reducing Switzerland\u2019s appeal to its geographical proximity would be a mistake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The country offers French companies a different business environment, with a strong concentration of high value-added activities: finance, industry, health, technology, watchmaking, luxury and business services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a French SME, creating a company or subsidiary in Switzerland can therefore serve several goals: accessing the Swiss market, getting closer to new clients, recruiting locally or taking the business to a new level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The strategy can also be gradual. There is no need to move the whole company. A business can keep its main activity in France and develop in Switzerland a sales structure, a local team or a management unit dedicated to the international market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This France\u2013Switzerland dual-location approach is one of the most promising options for companies that want to grow without cutting ties with their home market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Geneva, an anchor point for international markets<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Geneva\u2019s appeal, however, goes beyond the Swiss market alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The city enjoys a highly international business environment. Finance, commodity trading, watchmaking, luxury, health, technology, international organisations and business services rub shoulders every day with players from all over the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For a French company targeting the United States, China, the Middle East or Asia, this international dimension can be decisive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Geneva base can help build a local network of partners, meet international investors or clients, and benefit from a business environment where exchanges extend well beyond Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland\u2019s image can also play a commercial role. In some sectors \u2014 notably luxury, consulting, finance and B2B services \u2014 a Swiss presence can strengthen the perception of stability, reliability and quality among some international partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must be precise, however: a Swiss address is not enough to convince an American or Chinese client. Credibility rests above all on the quality of the offer, references, teams and the company\u2019s real ability to operate from Switzerland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Geneva has an advantage that is hard to replicate: it combines proximity to France with exposure to a truly global ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For an ambitious French company, the goal can therefore be twofold: win the Swiss market while using Geneva as a base for international growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ultimately, the real question is not just \u201cwhy set up in Switzerland?\u201d, but how to structure that presence to make it a real driver of growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
