Background
Geneva voters decide on 29 November 2026 on rezoning the Seymaz-Sud villa zone in Chêne-Bourg into an ordinary zone. The vote follows a referendum by the tenants' association ASLOCA.
The key points
On 26 October, the Geneva right launched its "Yes to Seymaz-Sud" campaign. It argues that rezoning will allow homes to be built quickly near the Léman Express station in Chêne-Bourg.
The project also plans to rezone a plot as a public facilities zone. No infrastructure levy will be charged, as the owners agreed to be compensated equally.
Key figures
- Area of the villa zone: 41,000 square metres.
- Area rezoned as an ordinary zone: 30,260 square metres.
- Area rezoned as a public facilities zone: 1,970 square metres.
- Homes planned: 270 according to the PLR, up to 400 according to the Green Liberals.
Who says what
The PLR: its president Pierre Nicollier considers the location favourable to densification, near the station, the greenway and public transport.
The UDC: Lionel Dugerdil wants to build "quickly and well to meet needs". According to him, the owners do not want a development zone.
The Green Liberals: their president Aurélien Barakat believes the ordinary zone allows larger building sizes than a development zone.
The MCG: MP Sandro Pistis warns that a rejection would delay development of the area by several decades.
What's next
Referendum backers, supported by the left and ASLOCA, are calling for a no vote. The Council of State also recommends rejecting the rezoning.
