Heatwave in Geneva: the Greens propose alternating traffic

Green MP Julien Nicolet-dit-Félix is proposing alternating traffic for combustion-engine vehicles during heatwave alerts.

⏱ 1 min read

Background

Geneva had three heatwaves before the end of July, according to Léman Bleu. Urban heat islands mainly affect the most built-up areas.

The key points

Green MP Julien Nicolet-dit-Félix is proposing alternating traffic for combustion-engine vehicles during heatwave alerts. His motion targets level 3 or 4 weather alerts, based on the odd-and-even number plate model.

The measure would mainly cover the Stick'AIR perimeter. The Council of State would define exemptions, notably for certain commercial vehicles. The motion also provides for free public transport and park-and-ride facilities during these periods.

Key figures

  • Three heatwaves before the end of July.
  • According to the Green MP, 70% of a combustion car's energy heats the surroundings, against 30% used to move it.

What it means for businesses

The PLR believes the measure would penalise businesses and certain professionals. They would not necessarily benefit from exemptions, according to MP Yvan Zweifel.

Who says what

Julien Nicolet-dit-Félix accuses the right of lacking ambition. "It is the extra degrees that kill," he says.

For Yvan Zweifel, no study shows that a temporary reduction in traffic would lower temperatures. He considers the measure ineffective and socially unfair. In the short term, he says air conditioning is "the one and only solution that saves lives".

What's next

The debate will continue in the Grand Council.
